Ozone Therapy

Oxygen ozone therapy is a medical practice carried out with a natural gas, ozone, free of side effects. It is used in the medical field for the treatment of numerous diseases. The concentrations of the oxygen-ozone mixture used are not dangerous to the human organism. Scientifically verified and approved routes of administration do not result in any adverse reaction; only inhaled administration can be toxic and irritating to the respiratory system.

What is Ozone?

  • Ozone (Greek for emanating an odour) is a natural and unstable molecule
  • The pure gas has a pale sky-blue colour and a pungent smell
  • Solubility (ml) in 100 ml of water (at 0 C) of both ozone and oxygen is 49.0 and 4.89 respectively, with oxygen representing a ten-fold less solubility quotient. Consequently, ozone’s great solubility in water allows for immediate reaction with any soluble compounds or biomolecules present in biological fluids
  • The half-life of an ozone molecule depends on temperature, thus at 20°C ozone concentration halves in 40 minutes, and at 30°C in 25 minutes

Oxygen ozone therapy, as improperly called, is not clearly defined from the pharmacological point of view, despite its wide use. Its inaccurate categorization has resulted in an improper assumption that the therapy is based on oxygen and ozone. The oxygen represents simply a carrier or a vehicle for the ozone molecule, and that its supposed oxygenating effects have only a minimal impact on the total biological action of ozone.

Medical ozone must be generated using medical oxygen with an atoxic generator, delivering accurate and reproducible measurements of ozone concentrations (1-80 μg/ml). Medical ozone is a mixture of approximately 0.5 to 5% of ozone in oxygen and the dosage of ozone is equivalent to the gas volume (ml) multiplied by the Ozone concentration (μg/ml). Although oxygen represents the greatest part (95-99%) of the mixture of medical ozone, it has a non-significant role over ozonated blood parameters.

The toxicity of ozone (O3) is mainly due to its strong oxidizing property. When breathed, due to the scarce presence of antioxidant defences in the mucosal airways, it can induce discomfort. Symptoms such as mucous membrane irritation and headaches can occur.
