Ozone Therapy

Oxygen ozone therapy is a medical practice carried out with a natural gas, ozone, free of side effects. It is used in the medical field for the treatment of numerous diseases. The concentrations of the oxygen-ozone mixture used are not dangerous to the human organism. Scientifically verified and approved routes of administration do not result in any adverse reaction; only inhaled administration can be toxic and irritating to the respiratory system.

What is Ozone?

  • Ozone (Greek for emanating an odour) is a natural and unstable molecule
  • The pure gas has a pale sky-blue colour and a pungent smell
  • Solubility (ml) in 100 ml of water (at 0 C) of both ozone and oxygen is 49.0 and 4.89 respectively, with oxygen representing a ten-fold less solubility quotient. Consequently, ozone’s great solubility in water allows for immediate reaction with any soluble compounds or biomolecules present in biological fluids
  • The half-life of an ozone molecule depends on temperature, thus at 20°C ozone concentration halves in 40 minutes, and at 30°C in 25 minutes

Oxygen Ozone Therapy → Ozone Therapy

Oxygen ozone therapy, as improperly called, is not clearly defined from the pharmacological point of view, despite its wide use. Its inaccurate categorization has resulted in an improper assumption that the therapy is based on oxygen and ozone. The oxygen represents simply a carrier or a vehicle for the ozone molecule, and that its supposed oxygenating effects have only a minimal impact on the total biological action of ozone.

Medical ozone must be generated using medical oxygen with an atoxic generator, delivering accurate and reproducible measurements of ozone concentrations (1-80 μg/ml). Medical ozone is a mixture of approximately 0.5 to 5% of ozone in oxygen and the dosage of ozone is equivalent to the gas volume (ml) multiplied by the Ozone concentration (μg/ml). Although oxygen represents the greatest part (95-99%) of the mixture of medical ozone, it has a non-significant role over ozonated blood parameters.

The toxicity of ozone (O3) is mainly due to its strong oxidizing property. When breathed, due to the scarce presence of antioxidant defences in the mucosal airways, it can induce discomfort. Symptoms such as mucous membrane irritation and headaches can occur.

  • Ozone kills bacteria and viruses on contact
  • Ozone increases the oxygen level on your cells
  • Ozone detoxifies your body
  • Ozone reduces inflammation
  • Ozone is anti-aging
  • Ozone can kill cancer cells
  • Ozone increases energy
  • Ozone reduces acidity
  • Ozone has been known to kill HIV

Clinical uses of Ozone

  • Modulation of red blood cells metabolism, improved oxygen supply
  • Arterial circulatory disorders
  • Modulation of immune cells cytokines, interferons and interleukins
  • Autoimmune disorders and inflammatory processes, e.g. arthritis, degenerative arthrosis
  • Increase and activation of the body’s own antioxidants and radical scavengers
  • Age-related processes, aesthetics and rejuvenation

Action mechanisms

  • Increases the deformability of red blood cells
  • Reduces blood viscosity
  • Improves oxygen transportation
  • Activates and modulates the immune system

The biological effects of oxygen ozone therapy treatment are:

  • Increased red blood cells (RBCs)
  • Bactericidal
  • Virostatic (it blocks the proliferation of viruses)
  • Enhances the immune system
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Fungicide
  • Analgesic

Effects of Ozone medicine

Topical effect

  • Microbicidal effect, such as bactericide, fungicide, virostatic – Wound cleansing effect
  • Improvement of wound healing
  • Efficient immune activator

Systemic effect on red blood cells

  • Improvement of rheological properties
  • Activation of RBC metabolism: increase 2,3- DPG and ATP
  • Shift the Hb O2 / Hb balance to the right with improved release of oxygen -Enzyme activation such as G-6PDH
  • Moderate activation of monocular cells
  • Release of Cytokines such as IL-1, IL-2, IFN-y, TNF-a and TGF-b, etc. -Immunomodulation

Aesthetic medicine

  • Cellulite
  • Localised adiposity
  • Edema
  • Telangiectasia
  • Acne
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Hair loss
  • Skin and genital rejuvenation

Some anti-aging effects can be attributed to the following list of actions:

  • Ozone increases cell oxygenation
  • Ozone increases cell energy production
  • Ozone increases cell energy production
  • Ozone increases ‘anti-oxidant enzyme system’ activity
  • Ozone reduces the level of acidity of body
  • Ozone is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal

Contraindication of Ozone Therapy

  • Patients with a significant deficit of G-6PD
  • Pregnancy, particularly in the early phase, to exclude the mutagenic risk (although according to the great number of preclinical studies in animals, it is very unlikely)
  • Abnormal situations with hyperthyroidism, thrombocytopenia, non-controlled coagulation disorders and serious cardio-vascular instability

Topical or locoregional

  • Nasal
  • Auricular
  • Oral
  • Vaginal
  • Urethral and intra-bladder
  • Rectal
  • Cutaneous
  • Dental

  • If applicable.
